Getting to the summit of Tianmen Mountain involves serious engineering. The journey starts right in downtown Zhangjiajie at the lower cableway station.
You will ride a 7,455-meter (24,459 ft) cable car or travel up an 11-kilometer snake-like road. Massive escalators built into the rock also connect the summit and the cave. Understanding these transport links helps you plan your day.
30-60 minsDowntown entrance
This is the main entrance and ticketing hub located directly in downtown Zhangjiajie. The 7,455-meter (24,459 ft) cableway journey to the top begins here. Lines for security and real-name passport checks get very long. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled time slot.
30-40 minsEco-bus route
This dizzying 11-kilometer mountain road wraps up the cliff to the cave plaza. It features exactly 99 sharp hairpin turns. Park eco-buses drive this route to transport visitors. Take motion sickness medication beforehand if you are sensitive to highly twisty rides.
20-30 minsBypasses stairs
This massive multi-level escalator tunnel connects Tianmen Cave to the mountain summit. It features seven sections carved entirely through the solid rock. Use this escalator to easily reach the top and skip the strenuous hike up or down the 999 Steps.
